Derived from Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, berberine is a powerful plant alkaloid obtained from the berries of barberry also called Berberis Vulgaris. It has been used for millennia in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for its immunostimulating, antibacterial, antifungal properties as well as its ability to reduce intestinal disorders (intestinal parasites, diarrhea, fungal infections). Berberine has hypoglycemic effects when administered to people with type II diabetes or who are overweight and affect glucose metabolism. Its mechanism of action is essentially the activation of AMPK. The body has many ways to respond to its own changes, including the protein kinase activated by AMP (AMPK - Adenosine Monophosphate activated Protein Kinase). AMPK is the cellular enzyme that promotes longevity and reduces fat storage.
